Unordered lists

Start each item with -, *, or + (pick one and stay consistent; - is the house style):

- Real numbers
- Complex numbers
  - Purely imaginary
  - With nonzero real part

Indent nested items by two spaces (aligned under the parent's text).

Only the first number matters – 1. / 1. / 1. renders as 1, 2, 3, which keeps diffs clean when you reorder items. A different first number starts the list there (3. begins at 3).

Blocks inside list items

A list item can hold paragraphs, code blocks, display math, or a nested list. Indent the continuation to align with the item's text:

1. Compute the integral:
 
   $$
   \int_0^1 x^2 \, dx = \tfrac{1}{3}
   $$
 
2. Substitute the result.

   $${\int }_0^1{x}^{2}dx=\frac{1}{3}$$

2. Substitute the result.

A blank line between items makes the list "loose" – each item is wrapped in its own paragraph with more vertical space. Without blank lines the list stays tight. Mixing the two in one list renders it all loose.
