Reference with [^label], define anywhere in the document:

The bound was later improved.[^tao2019]

All definitions render collected at the end of the page (scroll down – the footnote above is at the bottom of this one), numbered in order of first reference, regardless of where you write them. The label itself (tao2019) never shows – readers see numbers – so pick labels that help you keep track. Each footnote gets a backlink arrow returning to the reference.

A footnote definition can span multiple paragraphs: indent the continuation lines by four spaces.

Footnotes are for asides and source notes. For formal citations with reference lists, use the citation tooling in the editor instead – see the editor guide.
