This assumes you already have an account. If you do not, see Create an account – signing up is open to anyone and takes a minute.

Fill in enough of your profile to be findable

You do not need a complete CV before publishing, but three things make a real difference to whether anyone finds your work:

1. A photo and a short biography. Readers use both to decide whether a lecture is worth their time.
2. Your affiliation and position. These appear alongside your name on everything you publish.
3. Categories you work in. Following a category tells the platform what to show you, and the ones you leave visible appear on your profile so people working in the same area can find you.

Linking your ORCID is worth doing early if you have one – it is how your existing published work gets matched to your profile.

Publish something

Open New (/new) and choose Write to start from a blank page, or Import to upload a Word, LaTeX or PDF file — its language and type are read from the file, and you are asked only about what is unclear. A PDF is published as the PDF itself. When writing, you choose a type first, because it determines how the work is presented and how it is found:

Theses, preprints, and original research are not published here – those are citable records, and they belong on LibreJournal when it ships. See what is planned.

Then write. The editor takes Markdown, with mathematics, code blocks, diagrams, figures, and file attachments. The Markdown reference documents everything available; the cheatsheet is the one-page version.

Before publishing, add categories and tags. This is the main thing that determines whether your work is discoverable – an untagged publication is findable by full-text search and by people already on your profile, and not much else.

Mathematics, briefly

Inline mathematics goes between single dollar signs:

The identity $e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0$ relates five constants.

Display mathematics goes between double dollar signs:

$$
\int_0^\infty e^{-x^2}\,dx = \frac{\sqrt{\pi}}{2}
$$

Long formulae scroll horizontally rather than overflowing the page. A shared set of macros (\R, \C, \N, \norm, \abs, and others) is available without defining them yourself. See Mathematics.
